Mt.Tamalpais - BayWood Artists Benefit Art Exhibit for One Tam
Mill Creek - Mill Valley, 12x24", o/c
I have been hiking the trails on Mt. Tam for over 40 years, and it's one of my very favorite places to spend time out in nature. There are trails through the Redwoods and trails with spectacular views over the San Francisco Bay and the blue Pacific. The weather can be anywhere from bright sunshine to heavy fog, depending on the time of year, and still amazing either way. This year my painting group, the BayWood Artists, is painting Mt.Tam for our annual benefit art exhibit for One Tam, titled As We See It - BayWood Artists Paint the Spirit of the Mountain. One Tam, the community initiative of the Tamalpais Lands Collaborative, seeks to raise awareness about the need to maintain the long-term health of Mt. Tam, engaging more volunteers in caring for its treasured resources, and renew the spirit of philanthropy that has been so fundamental to its preservation over the past century. The BayWood Artists was formed 19 years ago and is a unique and diversified group of professional artists who share a passion for saving and preserving our San Francisco Bay Area environment.
Winter Afternoon - Mt.Tam 8x48", o/c
From a landscape painter's point of view, Mt. Tam is always an inspiring subject matter whether one is on the mountain or looking at it from a multitude of vantage points around the Bay Area. For this show, I have painted the mountain from various locations around Marin. The subject matter is one that could keep an artist like myself inspired for a life time of painting. One of my favorite times of day to capture Mt.Tam is the late afternoon when the sun angle is low and the shadows long. This summer I have spent quite a bit of time looking at the mountain from Ring Mountain, which gives the viewer a sweeping view of Mt.Tam's iconic silhouette. It was fun painting some of the winding roads up on the mountain as well. I also did a small 8x6" painting of the Fire Lookout which sits atop the mountain. Every summer the lookout is manned by volunteers who keep an eye out for potential wild fires in the area, a lonesome job but a very essential one.
Our show, As We See It -BayWood Artists Paint the Spirit of the Mountain, will be held on October 1 & 2 at the Mill Valley Community Center. 50% of the proceeds from the sale of the art work will go to help One Tam continue their mission. The event is free to everyone, and for more information please visit BayWoodArtist.org and OneTam.org. The BayWood Artists website has a preview of several of the paintings that will be featured in the exhibit. We hope to see you there!
